Week 21: XTra Math Emphasis

Hello 2nd Grade Families,

We are placing emphasis on fluency when it comes to our math facts! Your XTra Math login information will be coming home in red folders today. When your child completes a math operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication) they will be eligible for a prize in class. :)

HISTORY
Next week, your child will continue the discussion of the Constitution. They will learn about our Founding Fathers and the Bill of Rights. They will understand that some people were opposed to the Constitution during the time it was written.

SCIENCE
Your child will learn about cells, tissue, and organs. They will be able to describe that cells make up tissue, which makes up, organs, which make organ systems.

MATH
We are continuing with our addition and subtraction strategies. For weekend homework, we are now counting XTra Math as fluency practice! Your child's teacher will be able to supply you with the login information. It is a very simple program that can be done on the computer or ipad (possibly on mobile phone as well!) and only takes a few minutes to complete. However, those few minutes are very beneficial to the growth of your child's speed and memorization with basic fluency skills. Give it a try!

POETRY
We continue memorizing "Smart" this week. Second grade scholars should focus on stanza two. Remember, we will be focusing on one stanza each week and memorizing the entire poem.

LITERATURE
We are enjoying Little House in the Big Woods! Scholars will be reading chapter two and a portion of chapter three this week. They will learn about churning butter and how the Ingalls family spend their winters working and playing.

SPELLING
We have 31 spelling words this week. Please see the breakdown below.
Monday: nor, or, January, mean, vote, court, copy, act, been, be
Tuesday: yesterday, among, question, quest, doctor, size, December, dozen, there, their, they're
Wednesday: number, October, reason, fifth, baking, bake, bowl, cheap, cheerful
Thursday: nor-cheerful

GRAMMAR
Scholars refine their understanding of prepositions by learning about the prepositional phrase. Students will learn to tell whether or not a word is an adverb or a preposition (because it always clear) and will learn how to spot and then classify prepositional phrases in sentences. They will even learn The Prepositional Phrase Jingle!

WRITING
Once again,  we look at some lines of verse from Little House in the Big Woods. We will continue to work on our copywork and dictation skills with these lines.  Then, we will summarize passages from our reading, including the passage on churning butter. Ask your child to explain the process!
