Week Nine

Dear 2A Families, Thank you to all of our wonderful grandparents and parent volunteers who were able to come out today. It was a beautiful time meeting everyone's families. One more week and it's Fall Break! Let's work hard! SPALDING Scholars have 29 words this week. On Monday, they spell right, write, wrote, date, road, rode, ride, March, march, and next. On Tuesday, they spell indeed, four, herself, power, wish, because, cause, world, and country. On Wednesday, they spell meet, meat, another, tripped, trip, list, people, ever, held, and church. LITERATURE We read chapters 1 and 2 of The Box-car Children this week. Please send this book to school if you haven’t already done so. Your second grade scholar will be learning how to make inferences and how to identify important character traits. He or she will be discussing alertness and courage as they relate to the story. We will be studying the following vocabulary words: cross, cake, haystack, pump. WRITING We complete

Week Eight

LITERATURE We have finished reading Charlotte’s Web. This week students participate in a friendship seminar. We will discuss what it means to be a true friend. Each child in class, has been assigned a chapter or passage from the book to summarize in one or two sentences. Students will do a chapter summary reading of the book! On Wednesday, we will watch the film version of Charlotte’s Web and snack on popcorn to celebrate the end of the book! Our next literature selection is The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner. Please send your child’s copy of this book to school this week, so it is ready to go for next week. SPELLING There are 30 spelling words this week. On Monday, students spell watch, dash, fell, fight, buy, by, stopping, stop, walk, talk, and chalk. On Tuesday, students spell grant, soap, news, new, small, smaller, smallest, war, and summer. On Wednesday, students spell above, express, turn, lesson, half, father, anything, table, high, and June. Week Seven

LITERATURE We are reading Chapters 20-22 of  Charlotte’s Web  this week. We will continue to discuss humility, but will also find out how humility is related to friendship.  Here are the vocabulary words we will look at:  triumph, supernatural, unconscious, desolation, monkeyshine, mimicked, hallowed, pledge, garrulous. SPELLING There are 20 spelling words this short week. On Tuesday, we will spell catch, catcher, kitchen, butcher, black, warm, unless, clothing, clothes, clothe.  On Wednesday ,  we spell  began, begin, begun, able, gone, go, done, do, suit, track.   Please continue to dictate each word one and at time to your child as he or she practices them each evening. Ask your child to tell you when and where we use “ck” in a word.   POETRY Your child should have “Something Told the Wild Geese” memorized by the end of the week. We begin recitations on Wednesday by invitation. Please refer to the recitation rubric to help your child prepare to recite with confidence.

Week Six

Dear 2A Families, This Week in 2nd Grade... LITERATURE We are reading Chapters 15-19 of  Charlotte’s Web  this week. We will be discussing humility as a theme of the story and as a character trait, but also why humility is a virtue and how it manifests itself in thoughts, actions, and behavior. Here are the vocabulary words we will look at:  yarn, pummeled, pickpockets, midway, listless, keen, humble, schemer, magnum opus, languishing, bystander. SPELLING Your second grader will finish Section K of the Spalding Spelling list with 29 words this week. On Monday, we will spell  light, coming, come, night, pass, shut, easy, ease, bone, cloud.  On Tuesday, we will spell  draw, drink, garden, goose, hopping, hop, knife, mouth, oak, peach.  On Wednesday ,  we spell  pole, queen, rope, season, sign, space, wagon, wheat, window.   Please continue to dictate each word one and at time to your child as he or she practices them each evening. Week Five

History : Next week, your child will take their first test covering Geography and the Americas. Watch for a  study guide  coming home on Wednesday. Please help your child study. The test will be similar to the study guide. They will have to label the continents and the major countries of North America. Also, please remember that the  Island Project  is due September 9.  Science : The seasons quiz is on Thursday. Please help your child study next week using the  study guide  that will come home Tuesday. We will also learn the chicken life cycle this week!  SPALDING:  This week we have only 20 spelling words, it being a shorter week. On Tuesday, we spell   spell, poor, finish, hurt, maybe, across, tonight, tenth, sir, these,  and  those.  On Wednesday, we spell   club, seen, see, felt, full, fail, setting, set,  and   stamp. LITERATURE: W e are more than halfway through Charlotte’s Web! We are taking a vocabulary quiz this week on the words we study in chapters 8-14.
