Math: This week we are comparing numbers and practicing our skip counting! Our first unit test will be on Thursday, however we are doing plenty of review Wednesday to prepare your child. Keep checking their homework and reviewing their flashcards with them over the weekend!

History: Next week, we are learning about North America and Mexico. Your child will be able to locate Canada and the United States and identify important landforms. Your children will be able to talk about Mexico’s past and how it differs from today.

Your child also received their first project this week! Please see their red folder or this link for the instructions and rubric. This is something that they should complete on their own after gathering the supplies.

Science: We will continue to learn about seasons next week. We will learn about Winter and Spring as we discuss the Earth's tilt.

Spalding Spelling
Students will be writing and marking would-our in our spelling notebooks this week. You may expect homework on Monday and Tuesday, but not Wednesday (due to Curriculum Night). Concerning homework: Parents, we ask that you please dictate your child's spelling words to them each night. Remove or fold back the spelling list and directions, then read each word to your child one at a time. Provide them with a sentence. If your child misspells a word, ask them to write the word an additional two times correctly. Thank you for your support in this. Dictation practice helps our second graders learn and master these high-frequency spelling words.

Poetry
Are you ready to recite? Please ask your child this question. We will begin reciting "Bed in Summer" starting on Wednesday as students are ready and confident. The last day for recitations will be Friday, August 23rd. All students will be asked to recite. Use the recitation rubric to help you know how best to support your child!

Literature
We continue to enjoy Charlotte's Web. We read chapters 8, 9, and 10 after reviewing vocabulary from the first seven chapters and take a little quiz on it. This week we discuss boasting. Ask your child what boasting is and why we should not do it. Our new vocabulary words will be vaguely, unremitting, sharp, boasting, know-how, sedentary, gullible, straddled, and pasture

Grammar and Writing
Students will learn three more capitalization rules this week and will review the five parts of a sentence. Ask your second grader to list the five parts of a sentence on their fingers for you. Students will be showing that they understand these rules and sentence parts as they write narrative summaries of our Charlotte's Web chapters and copy and write a exemplary sentence from the text.
