Athletic Field Day is Friday, January 31st from 8:30-11:00 for K-2 classes and from 12:00-2:30 for grades 3-5! Each year classes are assigned a Greek City State for their team. This year, your child’s team is Macedonia, and our team color is red. Your child may wear a plain red shirt (no logos) other than class section or Greek City State and athletic pants or shorts. There will be no school lunch offered on Athletic Field Day. Please send your child to school with a lunch. Volunteers for field day are also needed. Please sign up using the following link:

MATH
We are well into our Multiplication Unit with working on our 4s and 5s this week! It is very important to practice with your child memorizing the different fact families (counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s). The more they memorize their facts, the less stressful it will be as we head into our larger fact families!
Science
This week, we are continuing our study of the human body by learning about the excretory system. Ask your child to describe how the digestive and excretory systems work together. We will also begin a study of nutrients and a well-balanced diet.
History
This week we wrap up the Constitution unit with a test on Wednesday. Please look for the study guide completed in class on Monday and sent home.
POETRY
Scholars should focus on memorizing stanza four of "Smart" by Shel Silverstein. Remember, your child is working towards complete memorization of this poem by February 6th.
SPELLING
We begin cursive instruction this week. There are NO spelling words. There will be handwriting homework each evening, starting with a manuscript handwriting review and then followed by practice with cursive letters in isolation, short cursive words, and difficult cursive connections. Our introduction to cursive will extend into next week. Please be on the look-out for a packet that will help you support your child's acquisition of cursive and help you help them as they practice at home!
LITERATURE and WRITING
Scholars read Chapter 5 of Little House in the Big Woods. Our copywork this week will be a few lines of verse from Isaac Watts that are also found in Little House. We summarize "The Story of Grandpa's Sled and the Pig" as well as a passage on Sundays in the little house.
GRAMMAR
Scholars continue to practice classifying sentences with prepositional phrases. We review and prepare for a grammar test to be taken at the end of the week.
With Grateful Hearts,
Mrs. Guevara and Mr. Kiehne
