Week Nine

Dear 2A Families,

Thank you to all of our wonderful grandparents and parent volunteers who were able to come out today. It was a beautiful time meeting everyone's families.
One more week and it's Fall Break! Let's work hard!

SPALDING
Scholars have 29 words this week. On Monday, they spell right, write, wrote, date, road, rode, ride, March, march, and next. On Tuesday, they spell indeed, four, herself, power, wish, because, cause, world, and country. On Wednesday, they spell meet, meat, another, tripped, trip, list, people, ever, held, and church.

LITERATURE
We read chapters 1 and 2 of The Box-car Children this week. Please send this book to school if you haven’t already done so. Your second grade scholar will be learning how to make inferences and how to identify important character traits. He or she will be discussing alertness and courage as they relate to the story. We will be studying the following vocabulary words: cross, cake, haystack, pump.

WRITING
We complete narration exercises for Chapter 1 and 2 of The Box-car Children this week. We focus on writing in complete sentences by making sure there is a subject noun and a verb.

GRAMMAR
We continue our work with classifying sentences. Scholars will be learning how to classify adverbs.

POETRY
Please help your child rehearse “Merry Autumn Days” by Charles Dickens. This week, we focus on the last four lines of stanza one.

Science and History
 We are wrapping up both the Life Cycles and Ancient India units this week with review and assessment. Study guides will be coming home Tuesday and Wednesday. The life cycles assessment will be on Thursday and the India assessment will be on Friday. Feel free to use the 20 minutes of reading time each night to study for these assessments. Don't worry! We will be studying and reviewing at school too! Your children have already worked very hard during these units and will just be asked to show what they know. 

Math
We will be finishing up our renaming unit this week! Please practice both addition and subtraction flashcards along with the homework. You can even quiz your child in the car with quick facts! On Friday we will be having our Cumulative Test, please review the study guide coming home Thursday Night.

Week 27: Field Trip!

Hello 2A Families! FIELD TRIP Our field trip to the Pioneer Living History Museum is on Friday, March 20! We will be leaving at 8:15 am and returning around 2:00. A   permission slip  has already been sent  home in your child's homework folder.  If you would like to chaperone this fun field trip, please email me by Wednesday, March 4 . We will select and send more information to chaperones after that date. Please be sure your child brings the following:  Sack lunch (everything should be able to be thrown out after eating) Disposable water bottle Wear tennis shoes and sunblock Hat & sunglasses (optional) MATH We are finishing up our money unit with understanding equations and word problems. Week 20 :Welcome Back!

Dear 2A Families, Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a beautiful holiday break. We are ready to hop back into our routines, and are very excited to back into the classroom. :)  POETRY "Smart" is a lovely poem by Shel Silverstein. Second grade scholars will work hard at memorizing the entire poem over the course of the next five weeks. However, slow and steady wins the race! We will be focusing on one stanza each week. This week we memorize stanza one. LITERATURE We begin  Little House in the Big Woods.  If you haven't already, please send in your child's copy. Scholars will be creating a lap-book as they study this literary classic. It will be a record of the reading activities they complete as they work to build their vocabulary and comprehension.
