As the daughter of an Air Force Veteran and wife of an Army Vet, Veterans day is quite close to my heart. Thank you to all that have served in our forces! I hope you have a restful three day weekend. :)

A special announcement concerning the Annual Spelling Bee...

"Dear Parents, 

It is my pleasure to announce that Spelling Bee season is upon us! Your child will be participating in a class Spelling Bee during the week of November 18th. Please use the word list sent home with them on Friday to study and make sure to read over the Spelling Bee letter for important dates and details. It is not mandatory for your child to study at home, however we recommend that all children participate in the class bee! Please reach out to me at any time if you have questions or concerns.

Our Winter Concert is quickly approaching! It will be at Higley Center for the Performing Arts on November 20th.  Students’ attire for our performances is NOT school uniform. Gentlemen are expected to wear a plain white dress shirt, black pants, black socks and black closed toed shoes. Solid dark colored vests and ties are optional for gentlemen. Ladies are expected to wear a white top, black skirt, black tights and black closed toed shoes. Please have your second graders at Higley Center for the Performing Arts by 5pm.

MATH
We are in our Multiplication Unit! This is an important time for addition fluency, so please continue to work on XTra Math, flash cards, or any other method that is useful for your child. SCIENCE
This week we will do a review and assessment of water cycles before we begin our study of insects! Ask your child to name and describe the parts of an insects body.

HISTORY
We are wrapping up our Ancient China Unit. Your child will learn about the meaning of the Chinese New Year and how it is celebrated. Ask them to tell you a couple of ways that Chinese people celebrate the Chinese New Year. Look for a study guide coming home on Friday.

POETRY
Scholar’s should have received a copy of “The Night Before Christmas” in their homework folders. Each scholar should prepare two consecutive stanzas to memorize. Please help your child prepare to recite with confidence! Recitations will begin December 16th.

LITERATURE
This week second grade scholars are reading Chapter 8 and 9 of The Boxcar Children. Our vocabulary words are stockings, clothesline, dumplings, and orchard. We will discuss determination and joyfulness as it relates to the characters in our story.

SPALDING
We have 20 words this week. We will not have a spelling lesson on Monday since there is no school on Veternan’s Day. Tuesday's words are less, event, off, of, true, truth, took, again, inform. Wednesday's words are both, heart, month, children, child, build, built, understand, follow, charge.

GRAMMAR/WRITINGScholars learn that nouns can be singular or plural this week. They continue to build and strengthen their skills in classifying sentences.

Week 27: Field Trip!

Hello 2A Families! FIELD TRIP Our field trip to the Pioneer Living History Museum is on Friday, March 20! We will be leaving at 8:15 am and returning around 2:00. A   permission slip  has already been sent  home in your child's homework folder.  If you would like to chaperone this fun field trip, please email me by Wednesday, March 4 . We will select and send more information to chaperones after that date. Please be sure your child brings the following:  Sack lunch (everything should be able to be thrown out after eating) Disposable water bottle Wear tennis shoes and sunblock Hat & sunglasses (optional) MATH We are finishing up our money unit with understanding equations and word problems. Week Seven

LITERATURE We are reading Chapters 20-22 of  Charlotte’s Web  this week. We will continue to discuss humility, but will also find out how humility is related to friendship.  Here are the vocabulary words we will look at:  triumph, supernatural, unconscious, desolation, monkeyshine, mimicked, hallowed, pledge, garrulous. SPELLING There are 20 spelling words this short week. On Tuesday, we will spell catch, catcher, kitchen, butcher, black, warm, unless, clothing, clothes, clothe.  On Wednesday ,  we spell  began, begin, begun, able, gone, go, done, do, suit, track.   Please continue to dictate each word one and at time to your child as he or she practices them each evening. Ask your child to tell you when and where we use “ck” in a word.   POETRY Your child should have “Something Told the Wild Geese” memorized by the end of the week. We begin recitations on Wednesday by invitation. Please refer to the recitation rubric to help your child prepare to recite with confidence.
